But thanks for letting me know. Unlike 99% of negative comments, yours is actually concrete, specific and therefore useful. Perhaps a possible improvement I should always consider is to bookmark my videos to indicate when I actually start getting to the point so it's easier to skip to that bit? 🤔 I have actually done that in a few of my videos that are of several parts, when the reason people started watching in the first place is highly unlikely to be the first bit.

    Thank you for such a detailed review! I'm bidding for model 231.3 from 1971 (according to the guarantee cards but the instructions are attached for 231.2) which has a key with 1 and §. It has one piece cover which probably makes it even lighter. By the way, Polish letter "ą" is a bit confusing because it is pronounced as nasal "o", not an "a". Although, there is a single informal exception: some careless speakers say the verb "włANczać" instead of "włączać". The letter Y is quite common in Polish but Z is much more frequent because of digraphs CZ, DZ, RZ, SZ. Letters Q, V and X are used only in loanwords. Some Polish produced typewriters have a key with the currency symbol "zł" for Polish złoty (literally: golden) 🙂

    The Jib Jib is the feeblest combat in the whole of fighting fantasy. If the Jib Jib is only trying to get away, it should have a higher skill score. A skill 8 would not be unreasonable.

    • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide Месяц назад

      Yes, it would make sense for it to have a higher skill, even to the point where you'd need a successful luck throw rather than a skill check or combat roll to defeat it - or even a combination: first a difficult combat roll, followed by a luck roll.

  • @cityman2312

    The city guard are a bit of a joke. Why are they nearly all so ineffectual in combat when they have the advantage of pikes, chainmail, iron helms, etc? • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide Месяц назад

      Yes, combat stats when seen relatively, can be rather ridiculous, but that's just how it is when you have a game system that is so horribly unbalanced, unrealistic, and yet where it should be reasonably possible to win.

    Most of the series were supposed to have ciphers as player characters so that any reader could insert themselves in. However, the writers in the original English versions do slip up sometimes and specify the player character is male when there is no need. These are - Citadel of Chaos where the washer woman ghost calls you "young man," City of Thieves where the thatcher's nephew refers to you as "him," Demons of the Deep where the crew of the Troll all call you "him," Creature of Havoc where Marr is described in talking to the Creature as a father would to his son and Midnight Rogue, although it's the illustrator who slips up - that's you on the cover. I have no doubt the Scandinavian translators all rolled their eyes and fixed these laughably obvious errors.

    • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide Месяц назад

      I don't know what the Norwegian translators did with the gender references. I only ever played The Warlock of Firetop Mountain in its Norwegian version, and only two more books were published in Norwegian: Citadel of Chaos and Forest of Doom. I don't think they'd have considered it errors since it's not ever made explicit that the references to the adventurer are supposed to be gender neutral.

    Remove one item from your backpack - so a single dragon egg counts as one item, but what about single portions of provisions? What about the ground minotaur horn jar, does the player character still carry that? Each iron ball counts as one item, but did the player character lose the ball they fired at the frost giant? Edit - and the spear and warhammer are not in the backpack, even though they would weigh a lot more than e.g. the garlic or rune stick.

    • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide Месяц назад

      Indeed. Any encumbrance rules based on number of items as opposed to size, bulk or weight are basically too simplistic and contrived to be of any value in a game such as this. What does work is putting the player in situations where items is limited in other ways, such as only being able to afford one or two items from a shop, for instance.

That makes the gold in that world worth only about as much as steel was worth in Medieval England and Germany.

With taking the Snow Witch's treasure, how do you interpret the "leave one item per fifty gold pieces" instruction? It's so vague, it poses the following list of questions: Does it refer to separate items, or all of a category of item? There are four dragon eggs, but the player will only use one. There are three iron balls, but the player will only need one against the Snow Witch. Does the player lose the ball they fired at the frost giant? Did they lose the rune stick they drove through the Snow Witch's heart? Did they use up all their ground minotaur horn on the white rat/dragon and then discard the container, or use some and keep the rest? (It does not specify). Does each individual portion or provisions count as a separate item? What about items that are not in the backpack, such as the redundant rings and cloak and the spear and the warhammer (if the player has them)?

  • @cityman2312
    @cityman2312 Месяц назад

    Strangely having the war hammer was a disadvantage. If you didn't have one, the genie would have made you invisible to get past the crystal warrior without a fight. It's another instance of Livingstone's poor game design.

      Yes, some editorial streamlining missing right there, and a little bit of sloppy handiwork, but not disastrous to the point of being gamebreaking as certain errors can be in some of the other books. Ian Livingstone might have been a prolific gamebook writer, and certainly an influential pioneer of the genre, but he's not the greatest, and in my view also completely overshadowed by his fellow FF originator Steve Jackson who tried evolving the structure and concept and had the decency of adding hints and clues. Ian Livingstone thought he had the formula sussed out very early on and tried applying the same one a few times too many. If I had been part of their D&D group back in those days, I'd have been looking forward to whenever it was Steve Jackson's turn to DM and dreaded whenever it was Ian Livingstone running the show.

      @cityman2312 Месяц назад

      @@hakonsoreide Livingstone's very obviously innumerate, so that would be a handicap in being a DM. Have you played Blood of the Zombies? It's utterly unplayable! Livingstone's ability to design started to go pearshaped in City of Thieves, when he suddenly forgot all about distinguishing between attack strength bonuses and replacing lost skill points.

      @hakonsoreide Месяц назад

      Yeah, there's a bit of false advertising in this and some of the other books that still basiclly just copied and pasted the rules section from the earlier books where that was actually true. Even with 12 skill and knowing the optimum path, this can be a tricky one.

    Hello Hakon. I'm a beginner with the Zoia, thank you for your videos, really helpfull, very clear ! I tried to reproduce this simple patch, but as soon as I connect the cv output of the 2nd sequencer to the oscillator frequency, and choose new values on the steps of the second sequencer, it immediately changes the pitch of the first sequencer even if the second sequencer is not engaged with the LFO. Did I miss someting ?

    • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide 2 месяца назад

      Hello. Thanks for your comment. It's been so long since I made this one I had to look at it myself to see what exactly was going on, and because it is so basic (I was quite a newbie myself when I made it), it doesn't actually disconnect the CV output from the second sequencer from the oscillator when it's not running, meaning that whatever value is on the last step of the second sequencer will still be added to the oscillator, and I presume that is the effect you have seen when patching this up. If I were to make this now, I'd probably have made it so that when triggered, it would wait until the next cycle of the main sequencer to start, only then connecting its value output to the oscillator on a single run through, and then disconnect when it was done. All a little more complicated, but perhaps I should revisit this and make a tutorial explaining that in detail one of these days.

      Thanks for the comments. Yes, I would have struggled to follow this as a noob too, though I try to keep the explanations at a very basic level, just not the absolute basics. The thing about the Zoia is the patching workflow is rather different to anything else, so it takes a little time to wrap your head around it and patch your own brain - so to speak - to think in a more Zoian way, but persistence pays off, and once you get into the thought process, it's amazing the kind of stuff you can do with it.

    One of the big benefits of the Sylphyo is that it not only wirelessly transmits audio the external receiver but also transmit MIDI thus any sample library you have on your computer can be played. The Embertone flute is very nice indeed.

      @hakonsoreide Месяц назад

      The Sylphyo is indeed a good MIDI controller. Embertone's Jubal Flute, though it actually doesn't allow for as much expression as other virtual instruments, such as the ones by Samplemodelling, is really well sampled with a lot of the expression already present.

      The SWAM instruments almost feel like they were made specifically for the Sylphyo, but as with any expressive controller, that also means you need to practice a little more to get the most out of them. The SWAM instruments also play great on controllers like the Linnstrument, but I think a wind controller for wind instruments is optimum since it's easier to get the natural cadence of breath and phrase that you might get playing the actual instruments modelled and sampled, as well as using your own variation in breath pressure for things like vibrato.

I did sell mine to focus on working in a more purely modular and open-architecture environment with the Dreadbox Dysphonia as my main synth voice since I still absolutely love that ineffable Dreadbox sound. I now have two Dysphonias, and no matter what other sound sources I use, they always barge their way to the front with their characterful filters, in particular.
